Fifteen-year-old Pummy’s cursed the day when she first learned how to make chai-coffee. Her morning’s started with Daarji calling out to her, “Pummy puttar, ek garam cha la de.” After a bit it was her Papaji, “Pummy ek chai le aa phat se.” And veerji’s, “Coffee Pummy.”
A little more time and some relatives would step in. “Ek garam chai ka pyala ho jaye.” Within a couple of minutes some guests would flock in followed by her mom’s inquiries, “Kya lenge? Thanda? Garam? And dad’s calling, “Pummy, chaaaaai.”
Her mornings were chai-coffee. Her evenings were chai-coffee. From Pummy she had become Pummy Chaaai. Chai had become the monster in her life. Five, sometimes 10 times a day she would end up making the hated chai-coffee. How she wished there was a way in which she could do away with the chai nonsense for once and for all.
