A narrow escape
“Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh!”
Charu smiled as her two little daughters chorused away merrily while her husband, Manu drove through National Highway 21, towards Shimla. It was dark now and a chilly wind blew through the terrain, causing them to roll up their windows. A pleasant relief from the scorching Delhi heat, that had forced them to keep the windows shut and AC on in the first half of the journey.
It was raining outside and the kids switched to another wintery song while the car circled the snaky road. Suddenly a pungent smell caught Charu’s attention. “Manu, can you smell something burning?” she asked. Manu, who was suffering from a bad cold since some days wrinkled his nose to catch a whiff, “Can’t smell a rat dear,” he joked.
“Can you pull over, maybe we should check the car,” urged Charu. “Okay, if you insist, but we have to get out of this downpour first, will halt at the first shelter I see,” he promised. Charu nodded absently. They had serviced their car just a couple of days back. In fact, he’d even bought new stuff including a Car Safety Hammer, a car perfume, etc. He’d also got the vehicle inspected before they started on the trip. Then why was something smelling like burning plastic? She wondered. Her mind was a mixture of all this when an explosion occurred.
Before she could comprehend, the car caught fire and overturned, skidding down the steep highway. All she could hear was screams. Her arms rushed to tear her dress away from the fire that caught it. Her children! She screamed helplessly in hysteria as their car rolled down the dark mountain side. “We are dying! Oh God! Save us!” Charu’s vision was now blurred, the car was on fire. Her nostrils burned because of smoke. Her kids were screaming in shock and pain. Manu, where was Manu? She couldn’t hear her husband. Her heart paced madly, as the car crashed against a tree and came to a standstill.
Her arm was broken. In pain she called out, “Manu? Manu?” A muffled voice met hers. Thank God! He was alive. Her kids were crying, obviously hurt, but she couldn’t move, her seat-belt was jammed. As she tugged at it wildly with one hand, her eyes saw the flames spreading over the car bonnet. It was a matter of seconds before the car engine would explode, killing them all.
At this moment she felt Manu’s hands around her belt. He had something in his hand – the Lifesaver Escape Tool: Car Emergency/Safety Hammer and Belt Cutter which he’d bought on a hunch, before starting on the journey. He had located the Safety Hammer (which was fixed to the upper-carpet) because of its fluorescent pin that shone in the dark and had immediately cut his seat-belt and now was tearing hers away.
In another moment she was free. She stretched backwards to rescue her kids. Manu took the Lifesaver Escape Tool: Car Emergency/Safety Hammer and Belt Cutter and smashed open the window on his right with its sharp hardened dual steel heads. Within a minute he had pulled her and the kids out and rushed them away from the blazing vehicle.
They were not more than 10 meters away when the car’s engine exploded, leaving nothing except a charred mess of steel.
