The scorching sun burned Tinku’s back as he staggered homewards. The weight of his backpack was crushing, bending him lower with each step. Brows creased, he kicked a pebble glued to the sidewalk; its cool composure mocked him. He wished he could be as unbothered by the unbearable heat and the day’s happenings. His troubled thoughts ran back to his Sports period.
All boys had rushed headlong as soon the bell rang for P.T. (Physical Training). Sports period was the most sought-after in the entire curriculum and today was extra special. Today their P.T. trainer, Mr. Kapoor, would teach them how to skate! Excitement brimmed in all eyes as new pair of skates appeared from all lockers. Reds, greens, blues, everyone had come fully geared for the lesson. Everyone except Tinku.
Tinku’s dad worked as the school clerk and couldn’t afford to buy him a costly pair of skates. He had tried to borrow a friends’ old pair, but his mother would not hear of it. “What if you fall?” So when Mr. Kapoor asked all the boys to gear up, Tinku hung his head in double misery. Being skates-less, he could not play. The teacher nodded at him kindly.
The class had ended with Tinku watching everyone whiz past him. “Hey Tinku! Join us! Run and catch us! Whoooo…” As the bell rang boys filed out sweaty but exhilarated. Tinku hid his tears behind a seemingly unbothered look. He so wanted to fly like all the other guys. He so wanted to race the wind on wheels. He prayed to God for giving him the best skates that were ever made.
Never did he know that God would answer so soon. When he reached home a surprise awaited him. His father was held out a box for him. “Tinku, this is for you.” Tinku stepped forward puzzled. The box looked heavy. It was wrapped in gift paper. Slowly he dropped his bag and started peeling off the cover. Within minutes he had uncovered it: Kids' & Adults' Inline Skates in Adjustable Size Range of 31-34 and 35-38.
He opened the box and found a perfect pair of Blue skates! These were even better than the skates that the boys in his class had! Blue, adjustable size, with protective guards for knees, elbows and palms. He slipped his feet inside, tied himself up tight, wore the protective gear and stood up straight. Whoa! These were even better than double roller skates. Inline skates provided better balance. He stood firm and tall. His mom smiled, “They are sturdy with extra closures, now you can chase the wind to your heart’s content.”
Tinku hugged his parents tightly. Then his father spoke up, “Son, do you know who bought these?” Tinku shook his head. “Mr. Kapoor did. He handed me the box before the last bell saying Tinku will be a great sportsman one day. He is strong, fearless and a big boy.”
For the second time that day Tinku’s eyes filled up with tears.
